Hook, Line, and Reader
The first ever Grab-the-Reader immediately contest.
The book business today is demanding. Readers want instant gratification. When a reader
selects a book on Amazon they go straight to the “Look Inside” feature to see if the book grabs
their attention before they even consider plunking down their hard-earned dollars. So, as writers
we must get them on those first couple of pages or we lose them. The goal of this contest is to
hone our grab-the-reader skills. Go over your work, edit, polish to make your reader want to buy
the book and keep turning those pages. It might be helpful to read the first pages of books in
your personal library and on Amazon as you work on your own Grab-the-Reader pages.
And here are the rules: Entries must be
1.
1-3 pages but, no longer than 3 pages.
2.
New or existing copy, but must be the beginning of the work.
3.
Double spaced with I inch margins and at least 12 point typeface.
4.
Put your name in upper left-hand corner.
5.
Pages numbered.
6.
Entries must received by November 10, 2021 to be considered.
7.
Entries should be emailed to James Gaskin at james@gaskin.com.
8.
First, second and third place winners will be announced at the December 6, 2021 meeting.
